Symposium on Successful Implementation of e-Learning

Chair: Kevin Au, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Now e-commerce is dead.  E-learning is hailed as the only big thing left.  Many e-learning programs have popped up and quite a

few companies have embraced this new idea.  However, my personal experience in teaching students and talking to executives

seems to be that companies tend to purchase e-learning programs when they have budget to spare on new toys.  The frenzy of

promoting this idea by both academics and entrepreneurs may have convinced managers that e learning is the same as

traditional learning except that it is cheap and effortless to use.

Unfortunately, this does not happen.  Due to various reasons, many of these programs lie around in the companies almost idle.

This is especially true to programs about soft management skills.  It seems that there is a gap between purchasing these prog-

rams and implementing them successfully for training and development purposes C apart from getting trainees to buy into them.

This symposium will draw practitioners and academics to discuss first-hand information and practices that enhance the usage of

e-learning programs in organizations.
